ABOUT ME

I AM YILDIRAY SAIT YANIK, 24 YEARS OLD AND FINISHED MY BACHELOR OF ARTS (ARCHITECTURE) IN MUNICH 2023.

LONG BEFORE I GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL, IT WAS CLEAR TO ME THAT I WOULD LIKE TO PURSUE A CAREER IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY. STARTING AS A CHILD, I BUILT SMALL HOUSES WITH BUILDING BLOCKS, THEN LATER DIGITALLY IN VARIOUS COMPUTER GAMES, SUCH AS MINECRAFT. LAST BUT NOT LEAST, I TRIED TO IMPLEMENT MY DESIGN IDEAS USING MORE PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS LIKE AUTOCAD, ARCHICAD AND REVIT.

DURING SCHOOL I PARTICIPATED IN THE P-SEMINAR "ARCHITECTURE & SCHOOL", IN WHICH I WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO REDESIGN THE SCHOOL.THROUGH THE SEMINAR WORK, WHICH CONSISTED OF UPCYCLING EXISTING WARDROBES INTO SEATING AND BY ATTENDING LECTURES BY VARIOUS ARCHITECTS, I GAINED DEEPER INSIGHTS INTO THE PROFESSIONAL FIELD.ESPECIALLY THROUGH THE DESIGN COMPETITION IN ANDELSBUCH IT BECAME CLEAR TO ME WHAT ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN STAND FOR.

AFTER GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL, I WORKED AS A WORK & TRAVELLER ON AN AUSTRALIAN FARM, WHERE WE HAD TO FENCE IN AN AREA OF ALMOST 50 SQUARE KILOMETERS AND CONVERT AN EXISTING BARN INTO A LOFT. ALTHOUGH I HAD TO WORK ALMOST 12 HOURS EVERY DAY, I WAS SATISFIED AT THE END OF THE DAY BECAUSE SOMETHING USEFUL HAD BEEN CREATED.BACK IN GERMANY, I APPLIED FOR AND WAS ACCEPTED INTO THE CIVIL ENGINEERING PROGRAM AT THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY IN MUNICH.

DURING MY STUDIES, I NOTICED THAT THE POSSIBILITIES FOR CREATIVE DESIGN WERE LIMITED. THIS WAS CONFIRMED TO ME BY MY WORK AT MCDONALD'S CONSTRUCTION, AS WELL AS IN THE SIEMENS REAL ESTATE DEPARTMENT, WHERE I WAS ABLE TO EXPERIENCE THE EVERYDAY WORK LIFE BY WORKING WITH CIVIL ENGINEERS AND ARCHITECTS.

I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THE DESIGN OF A BUILDING IN GENERAL FOR SEVERAL YEARS. MY FOCUS IS ON THE NATURE AND PROPERTIES OF SURFACES AND MATERIALS.OF SURFACES AND MATERIALS. ANSWERS TO THE QUESTION OF HOW EVERYTHING CAN HARMONIZE WITH EACH OTHER.IN ADDITION, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME IN MY FUTURE TO DO A JOB THAT IS MORE THAN "JUST" WORK. I BELIEVE THAT AS AN ARCHITECT YOU ARE IN YOUR ELEMENT ALL THE TIME, BECAUSE YOU ARE SURROUNDED BY BUILDINGS AND INFLUENCES OF ARCHITECTURE PRETTY MUCH EVERYWHERE. YOU COULD SAY THAT THE WHOLE WORLD IS A PLACE OF INSPIRATION.

APART FROM THAT, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR ME TO DO A JOB IN MY FUTURE THAT IS MORE THAN "JUST" WORK.ESPECIALLY WORK THAT MAKES SENSE IN MY EYES. OF COURSE IT IS NICE TO DESIGN UNUSUAL AND VERY SPECIAL ARCHITECTURE, BUT THEN WE HAVE A VERY BIG PROBLEM IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

HOW WE BUILD, HOW MUCH WE BUILD AND ESPECIALLY HOW MUCH WE SPEND IS OFTEN LEFT OUT OF THE EQUATION. IN A WORLD WHERE WE HAVE KNOWN FOR ALMOST A CENTURY THAT THERE IS MAN-MADE CLIMATE CHANGE, IT IS SIMPLY WRONG TO BUILD THE WAY WE DO.

IF YOU LOOK AT THE PERCENTAGE DISTRIBUTION OF CO2 EMISSIONS, FOR EXAMPLE, YOU WILL SEE THAT THE BUILDING SECTOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALMOST 30%. I DON'T WANT TO SAY, HOWEVER, THAT WE HAVE TO SWITCH TO, FOR EXAMPLE, ONLY WOOD CONSTRUCTION BECAUSE, FIRSTLY, IT IS WRONG TO GO DOWN ONE TRACK AND SAY THAT WOOD IS OUR SOLUTION AND, SECONDLY, A NEW WOODEN BUILDING DOES NOT HAVE A BETTER ECOLOGICAL BALANCE THAN AN EXISTING BUILDING BECAUSE MOST OF THE "GREY ENERGY" OCCURS DURING PRODUCTION.

BUT EVEN IF YOU RENOVATE THE EXISTING BUILDING AND THUS DON'T ADD TOO MUCH MORE GREY ENERGY, THE PROBLEM OF SPACE QUICKLY COMES UP. OUR CITIES ARE GROWING RAPIDLY AND WE CAN HARDLY KEEP UP WITH PROVIDING ENOUGH LIVING SPACE FOR EVERYONE. IF YOU LOOK AT THE STATISTICS, YOU WILL QUICKLY NOTICE THAT THE SIZE OF THE LIVING SPACE OF ONE PERSON HAS TRIPLED SINCE THE 70S. THREE TIMES AS MUCH SPACE MEANS THREE TIMES AS MUCH GREY ENERGY IN THE PRODUCTION AS WELL AS THREE TIMES AS MUCH ENERGY WHICH ONE NEEDS FOR HEATING ETC. NEEDED.

WE SHOULD BE AWARE OF HOW, ON WHAT SCALE, AND ESPECIALLY WITH WHAT WE BUILD AND POSSIBLY THINK TWICE, OR MAYBE THREE TIMES, IF A BUILDING DOES NOT FIT INTO OUR NEW ROOM CONZEPT.
APPLIED TO NEW BUILDINGS, WE SHOULD DESIGN BUILDINGS IN WHICH WE CAN ACCOMMODATE ANY FUNCTION IN THE FUTURE.


IN SUMMARY, MY THREE MOST IMPORTANT GUIDELINES: 


         MORE EVIROMENTALLY FRIENDLY BUILDING,
           TO REDUCE HARDLY ANY MORE GREY ENERGY
          
          LESS DEMOLITION,         
          TO PRESERVE EXISTING GREY ENERGY
               
          OPTIMIZE FLOOR PLANS,
          TO LIVE JUST AS COMFORTABLY ON SMALLER FLOOR PLANS
